Just a quick useful tip for those doing graphic design.

On producing the 'glow' effect on small graphic objects.

For best effect, whatever acts as the light source, make that light 'white'.  Trust me.

After that, use a dropshadow or similar effect that places the desired color of your glow behind the white so that it shows up around the edges.

No matter which color you use, your eyes will actually believe the glow better.  For example.  The red-glow sphere.  The circle is white.  But once surrounded by red, the white 'appears' to have a slightly pinkish hue.

Use of soft strokes such as the bottom set REALLY bring this effect out.
For a coup-de-gras...  A lense flare or sunburst on the layer occupied by only the circle can bring out some nice effects.

More or less, this technique works on any shape.  A ball, a line, a zig-zag of lightning.  You want it to look like it's glowing, draw a white line, and give it a dedicated drop shadow in the color of your desired glow.

(In case anyone wonders where this came from.  I was looking at the topic about transparencies... and that blue orb was just jarring.)
