Hehe... yes, that was fun. I remember spok's servers some time ago... he used to run The Sirius System often, but with powerup debris from Beginner Sol. Skillet also did that in his Star Trek Stellar Frontier server... I still remember searching for powerup debris to make a super Sovereign-class starship. Grin

On the other hand, servers with significant powerup debris made it so that if there was someone in the server who had already been collecting powerups in the same ship for half an hour or more before you logged in, you were pretty much screwed if you went up against them, no matter how skilled you were or how well you fought. It could be pretty annoying at times. :p

I used to love playing Spok's Server with Ragen. We would go pirate SB's and steal Venus from the D race..I forget what they are called. We would just spam the dock key while shooting....so fun...we lasted forever. Good times, good times.

I remember my dedicated Dock Killing sessions against Pirate Bases.

Pissed them off to no end.

RAAAEG~"STOP THAT! I'M AN INVINCIBLE PIRATE BASE!"

-BOOM!-

"Not anymore..."

 Grin

And then the time I got into a base with like, two L3s and armor... shields...  People tried the same thing on me... but I was well versed in counter-ram operations and G1 tactics.  It took twenty failed attempts by multiple players in a coordinated effort just to take me out once.

Attempts included direct ramming, G3 spamming, suicide attempts, mines... bombs... the works.

The trick was, that during the Jump entrance and exits, you would spot someone on the radar.  The middle click will select someone, cloaked or not...  And the cloak doesn't last long enough to approach from range beyond the radar...

So by the time they make their run, I'm aimed at them, see the cloak shadow, have them selected, and fire a G1.  As they decloak for their impact, they slam right into a G1 (kills the ram) and get a pair of L3s to the face.  Dead before they even know what happened.

G1 defensive fire also helps in counteracting G3 suicides.

"Eat G3!"

"Isn't that my G1 detonating?"

"OH SHI-"

*G1 sympatheticly detonates G3s...*

-BOOM!-

People always underestimated my tactical loadout.

G1s, Mines, 2 standard torps.  Maybe a laser in place of one torp tube... depends on the results I'm getting in fights.

The problem I generally encountered in protracted battles against multiple opponents was running out of explosives (mines, grenades) rapidly, then running out of torps, then finally running out of armor. 1500 rapid2 torps may sound like a lot, but especially when put on autofire, they drain out pretty quickly. At times I became so frustrated with running out of explosives (you only get 4 grenadeIs or only 10 mines or only 2 grenadeIIs per tube), I used a setup with a laserIII, two rapid2s, and a stinger/plasmatorp/disruptor. Problem with that was the stinger/plasmatorp/disruptor bullets usually moved too slowly to be of much use against fast-moving, nimble opponents, unless I put them on autofire and blanketed space with them, and then they would run out rapidly...

So then I experimented with using an ImplodeMine tube instead. That was somewhat better, at least you had 50 mines to play with. They weren't of much use in killing people, but they were of immense use in defending against rams as well as some explosives attacks. They were even of some use against enemy Starbases as they could be used to blow away incoming bullets, allowing time for your shields to recharge.

I abused the Maurader for its nimble velocity.

A starbase is more of a defensive vehicle than an offensive one.  If you were running out of weapons, it means you were coasting around far from the main supply point.

If you want a powerful offensive ship, I'd go for the agility and capacity of the Maurader with the shield 5 and armor III, cloak with the mine, G1, torp, L1 loadout.  Really, the torps and L1 are more of flash and sparkle than your primary killing loadout against hardenned opponents.  But that's what mines are for.

Usually the G1 is a 'defensive' weapon in my book, used for blasting away fire, beating down shields, and causing sympathetic detonation.  The Mines are used for rapid insta-fragging sessions against tough opponents.  (And you've probabably seen how effective they are in running manuever fights.)

Against the usual newbs who cruise about the servers though... the Torp and L1 loadout is enough to scare the pants off them.  (Usually because they lack the heavy gear, or knowledge of the heavy gear.)  I've been 'challenged' by newbs time to time...  Usually lasted under ten seconds.  ("Sorry kid, come back later.")  It's the ones that go insane with revenge greed that upset me.  "I killed you five times in a ROW, you haven't nicked me!  Buzz off!  You're just going to die MORE."

I don't like being a bully.

Offensive Starbase FTW!  Cheesy

Seriously though... yes, of course the Marauder was always my primary 'serious' ship. For pretty much whatever purpose, the Marauder was the best ship. Starbases were just fun ships to fly on occasion... and the omnidirectional laserIII on them was the best part of all as with their range and omnidirectional firing ability they cut through lag and '500' armor like a hot knife through butter. And of course Starbase duels were nifty as well.

Gosh, these days I don't even remember my preferred Marauder setup really... I think I generally used a flame-laser-torp-torp setup. But I could be mistaken...

i always used my Standered Configuration of the maurder that i learned for a destroyed from Dood
of HOPE many years ago

tube 1:rapid 1
tube 2:Stingers
tube 3:laser 1
tube 4 laser 1

The 2 lasers really were more for show it looked like they were cutting ships like a pair of fangs.
ohh those were the days.

anyways i rarely used armour because the weight made the ship less manuverable
and as we all know if you cant get out of the way Regardless of Lag

BOOM see ya game over man
