what's the lore behind the qdrive? if i knew this i could give a better suggestion.

however, i think you should have to have engines to turn to the warp vector.

Pretty much, you turn to warp, must be pointed at the ship, and warp out at a pretty fast speed. During warp, you can't be harmed, and theres really no limit to how far you can go. If your warp drive is disabled, you can't warp out. Running out of power in qdrive at the moment only slows down qdrive, doesn't stop it (prob should stop it).

It's pretty basic, having turning stop completely would be a bad idea, as you wouldn't defend yourself at all. Though, I was thinking about it, at this time if your ENGINES are disabled, your rotation rate slows down. Perhaps I should increase the delay on rotating when engines are disabled. So you can still rotate, but at a slow rate.

In the future i was thinking 'specific' devices or weapons that hinder a specific module, much like HEAT missiles do (Heat missiles disable engines, most people probably don't know that, hard to hit with those though since they only move when a ships moving (aka heat of engines). Could have a 'interdictor' to prevent warp in a close range, for example, etc. I was hoping to make modules and weapons alot more 'defined' in the future, though.

i know what it does, but do you know the lore (or story/how it's built) behind it?

IE:
Star Wars' Hyperdrive is a system that move the ship into "subspace" or "hyperspace" and then moves it at an incredibly fast rate. however, being near to large centers of gravity can shred it (not a qdrive, obviously, i can warp while on top of a star)

Star Trek's warp drive is probably the closest thing to the qdrive.

you should have to MANUALLY get your pointing vector close to the warp vector, and then the computer finishes the align, and you jump.
however, while in warp, you should take a while to accelerate/decelerate. (ie when you are about to come out of warp, you slow down, and when you come out, you aren't stopped)
it should also have a little bit lower hp, as it should, in theory, be a bit fragile.

Although ALBERT took down the site, Douglas Hendrix originally said that the "warp drive" in the game was "Quantum Drive". I'm sure SOMEBODY has that article of Doug mentioning it now that the Stardock SF site has ceased to exist.

Yeah, but I don't think there was much storyline to the qdrive though even still, SD. qdrive = Quantium Drive like you stated Tongue

I agree, qdrive should accel/deaccel, and I don't think you should be invisible during. But it needs a nice effect. I honestly think the reason there is no effect and ships 'vanish' & 'invincible' is simply the fact that it was 'easy' to do. It will take a bit to get it the way I'd like to get it.  I agree about being more fragile too. I do want to add manual pointing and warping out

Theres a few things that can be done here. For example (some can be mixed)..

-You could need to slow down to warp out.
-You could warp out at whatever speed you are at long as you are pointing correctly, and you can 'keep' the same speed when you come out of qdrive.
-You come out of qdrive at 0.05 or 0.10
-Settable delay when you hit the jump button, slower for larger ships.
-Delay after you warp out until you can use warp drive again, again slower for larger ships.

etc.

The Stardock SF site was taken down because it was primitive (it only supported basic HTML/CSS) and hard to update (Stardock kept moving the site to different servers, and as a result my FTP access kept breaking). And, given that we already have SF.Net now, I thought that it would be redundant to keep the Stardock site around. So, Kris and I decided to simply redirect the site to SF.Net. That way, we have a single authoritative SF site, under Nite's direct control.

Re Doug's ancient comments, Nite's correct- there was never much storyline to the QDrive. Doug called it "quantum drive," and that's about it. AFAIK he never devised any technobabble to explain the workings of the "quantum drive." Right now it seems to share some similarities with the FTL technology of Babylon 5 and Star Wars. But it'll probably be altered in the future (see Nite's post). Wink

If you want to get into Q-drive lore... There's always checking out the Galactic Civilizations fluff.

After all, unless we plan to dump all the old stardock based concepts and build a universe from scratch, we're just recycling GC Fluff.  Better to just import the fluff and work with it, than to start contradicting it.

If we decide to start universe building from scratch...  I vote the Q-drive become the SDD.  Or Subspace Displacement Drive.

that's exactly what i was thinking.
it could have a high recharge time to compensate for almost instantaneous travel.
with that system, you should also take the mass limit off of the drive.

however, a Quantum Tunnel Drive should create a tunnel entrance in front of it, and you exit at the exit.

if it's a light speed device, that just moves you at lightspeed, you should be able to shoot at other ships moving in a similar trajectory to your own. almost another fighting level in space.
