Only if you're expecting it, or overly cautious.

It's called 'common sense'. Players who routinely fall for people who 'play dead' like that are either pretty new/ignorant or pretty stupid.

It's only common sense if it's actually common.  Given how frusted people can get in a protracted fight, there have been and are plenty of times a perfectly skilled player has fallen for the feint in an effort to move in for the kill.  Better players still fall for it, but usually their skill keeps them from getting wiped out because they have subtleties in their manuevering that allow them to break away with moderate damage.

Part of using a feint is to know the best time to use it.  Long fights turn into chess matches.  It's finding when the opponent is likely to start making careless mistakes because they want to hurry up and make a kill.

I don't get the point of taking a defensive stance in a duel... it's retarded...

And then to say cloak is a sissy move? LMFAO

Come duel me and don't use cloak, and I'll keep backing up and firing. We'll see who runs out of ammo first.

I take a defensive stance? Ask anyone I'm always chasing unless I get redbarred or blackbarred and it's necessary to play defensively. Cloak is a bitch move in duels. Oh hi there, I can't see you WOW SKILLZ.

Under the rules of freestyle dueling, where you are permitted to use the loadouts of your choice, any and all tactics are viable.

Cloaking has distinct flaws.

Flaw 1:  No cloak, no shield.
Flaw 2: Cloak makes you unseeable.  Not unkillable.
Flaw 3: Cloak is time limited.  They will vanish, but you can be sure they'll be making final approach at around seven to fourteen seconds.

If someone is cloaked, counter activity based on my agressor experience is fire a spread dispersal.  If they attempt to approach, they will inevitably hit one, which will both reveal them, and cause damage.  If they don't want to get blitzed a moment later, they will jump out, or drop the cloak.

Other counters including going into a gopherhop to try and draw them out, running away from them to draw their cloak timer down, and my personal favorite... chuck a G1 in their direction.  If they stay cloaked, they're f***ed.

If you fail to adapt a counter strategy where others obviously can, you are unfit for the title you were claiming.

Adding onto ATC's post, If I remember correctly cloaking makes your ship completely black, meaning if you pass over stars (something inevitable) you actually cover those stars. So your opponent can still basically 'see' your ship.

Not true anymore.

Nite made the cloak use correct transparency rather than black maps.

But suffice to say, cloaking can only kill you if you stick around.  If you don't like the cloak, start Q jumping or 'gopherjumping' around.  Use tactical Qdrive manuevering to its fullest.

Haha, see I am not the only one that said you typically take a defensive stance to fighting.  Not saying that is a bad thing to do, don't get "defensive" about doing it  Grin.

And Staker - I don't think you read ATC's post carefully enough. I've certainly never seen you duel in a Cruiser...
You haven't played since 1999... Therefore you haven't seen me... now that maurauder is not a good ship... I use all ships now Tongue

Real and correct fight are not matter of SF.
In a correct fight it is supposed to fight with the same possibilities, same choice of weapons etc., in SF there is a weapon that is more lethal that Big one that's lag.
Untill lag problem is solved, you cannot ever say who is the best fighter.
If someone understands really good lag as for example Staker does, he can kill you with few shots.
Another way is to manipulate your lag. As some players do.
So no player is better than another until this 'problem' will be solved.
This is my opinion.
