Ping over 1000?

Ouch.

Either the server's geographically far away from them, or somewhere in the hops the signal gets bounced off a satellite.

Lightspeed is 186,000 miles per second.
Geosynchornus, or rather geostationary orbit where communications sats are located is 26,000 miles up from the equator.  Each ping is four trips across the void (one outbound up to the sat, one outbound down, one inbound up, one inbound down)  totalling 104,000 miles, or around 0.6 seconds or 600 ms alone.  And again, that's from the equator.  From higher latitudes, the angle increases that distance by at least a quarter...

If you slap that on top of the normal network lag ranging between 200 and 500 ms on average, you've got an easy 1000ms ping.

I'm in europe, so I get about a 300-600MS lag depending on the USA/CANADA connection alone.

1800 sounds pretty insanely high though. He may either have a connection that is bogus/slow connection, or he is having issue with noise in his connection. I've seen tracer issues where you see high pings at start high, which they shouldn't be. If that's the case whoever his company is with for internet should come down and test the lines and any issues.

Arent the ports displayed when you run the server, like port 20000-20005 would be good. (extra ports for players who like to set there port one or two higher.)

And damn ATC, lol. Though basicly hes right, I still think 1800 is very high unless the guys on 56k. I've never had that much lag unless my connection is maxed out and im trying to SF it up. In a sense though if your a good continent away, your going to have high lag issues. Hense why there is US/EU/AUS servers in other games.

He's in Canada, I think, and he has some funky wireless Internet that, in fact, does get bounced off a satellite. I suppose that explains the high lag...

Satellite is horrible for gaming from what I hear. High latency in general if the computer where the server is being run is just a cable/etc. He needs a actual 'server' server.. If you get what I mean. One not run from a house Tongue Not really going to happen any time soon! Tongue

Satelllites are absolutely horrible for gaming.  Instead of a 3000 mile trip at MAX, you're going about ten times the distance.  Forty times that really including all trips.  Really, when the direct distance is a few hundred miles to the server, a side trip that's over a hundred thousand miles is a joke.
