Mechanical trick.

Center mass is located in the head of the hammer below the wood.

The string in the middle acts as a fulcrum to the hammer so the force of the weight can be applied upwards on the far end of the ruler.  The string acts as a fulcrum again on the ruler allowing the force to be directed back down, pressing it against the wood.  So long as the head of the hammer remains below the left end of the ruler, the system is balanced.

Essentially, since most of the mass is the head of the hammer, and since the leverage is being applied in the triangular configuration, the fact that most of the volume of the object is suspended in mid air does not matter.
