Hey everyone, I apologize for my absence as of late - was finishing up my undergrad degree and was quite busy (as you could possibly imagine).
Right now I would like a list of issues that are coming up with the nexus currently, I am walking through the code making a few changes here and there but would like to get a current list of things going wrong. Hopefully by this I can get a much more stable and useful nexus going.
Also my plans include working on the update system that is in place, currently it can be quite annoying to maintain as we do many releases. So I would like your thoughts on it. I propose 4 possible options to the updating of SF.
1) Keep the Current System - You like having the choices and it works out well 2) 1-Click Updates - Go back to the old system where you hit update and it will just download and overwrite all the files present (fresh install) 3) 2-Clicks - "Hybrid" Solution - Have a system like the current but a 1-Click button will always be present... can allow for downloading other material 4) Automatic - Have a passive system that will automatically update if your version is lower than the current one reported by the nexus... I guess no mess no fuss - but requires you to always run the latest.
To defend the current system - it does allow for the potential for interesting add-ons to easily be downloaded... say if we had some utilities they can just be installed into the SF directory... etc.
Let me know your thoughts, otherwise I'll see you in-game!

Honestly, I could see the old type system being in where it just updates the files to the newest version. Basicly doing a checksum and updating if needed be. This way possible I can just update the files too without you having to modify the java program every time too that way Though it can be a two click, one to update to the newest and then in future we can add special mods there like Sandtroopers mod. But yeah.. They shouldn't really be modifying the generic dat files. Overall I'm not really sure either. Just like I stated in the others forums about the creation of the nexus and logging in nexus, to have better messages, specially if your pass is wrong it doesn't tell you

I vote automatic on the basis that there is probably a reason the update is being offered in the first place. Could be a safety issue, could be exploits present in the current version, etc. Just force update everyone that way nobody has to worry about anything.

I think for now, the current system is fine.
We're not very 'large', and it's easy to inform of the latest updates.
I wouldn't really want any automatic updating going on while the code is not yet seccure and the possibility (however slim) of someone slipping a virus into the system is in there. All it needs is one hack while you're asleep to slip a trojan into the package, and it gets distributed without so much as the ability to say 'no' to an update with no 'Update Notes'
And the Trojan could be a worm type virus, or it could be a desktop hijacker, or a key stroke logging bastage.
Not to downplay the work you've done, but you're not a Microsoft Dev Team or a Norton programming guru. Realisticly speaking, the security is a pitifiul joke. And we all know it's a pitiful joke.
That being said, I have to vote against something like this. At least for now. It's too much of a security flaw to allow a currently underseccured program the ability to place files on your system without consent. (Which reminds me, did we do anything about the program downloading server files? I recall that was another security hole the size of Texas.)

Fair comments, would probably still require a click approval. Yes the server bug has been fixed in that respect. The server is no longer an open FTP client, lol

Honestly, I'd only have the 'latest' download available. Latest download, they raise the interesting and possible mods, like Sandtroopers mod, its quite large but its a great mod. It would be worth it to 'promote' these mods because they are generally interesting. Otherwise normal dat files downloads and other things can be in the new datamanagement website

I think latest will be an option but it will still menu and allow for other "goodies" to be downloaded.
