I HAVE BEEN INFORMED AND HAVE TRIED MYSELF TO STAY ON ANY OF THE PUBLIC SERVERS.  I have found that i cannot stay on any public server longer than 4 min and it seems neither can any of our players who use dial up.

this problem is most likley due to no one putting extra 00000000000 in the ms box and turning laggers off.
since we cannot play on public servers or anyone who has dial up cannot play there it is now for all purposes a high speed only play area.  making sf public servers exclusive to folks that can get high speed in their area.  we cannot.

I would ask the nice minions or Sir nite himself to see if that problem can get fixed.

I don't know if you have done this or not but, try turning off all other programs while running sf.  Not just the ones that connect directly to the internet such as IM or irc.  Other programs tend to effect the ms and fps like itunes.  Although itunes might connect to the net at all times it is running (never payed too close attention).  Anti virus and firewalls will also eat up some of that limited bandwidth dial up users have.

I don't know why you get disconnected so often however.  For the longest time, I played where the best connection I could get was 28.8k and was able to stay in game for long periods of time.  My concern in raising the lag kicker is that people will try and create more lag for themselves.  It has been done in the past.  I don't really know why people do that because it just makes it harder on themselves to kill anything as well.

Just some thoughts...

Issues occur that need to be fixed when turning off lag because it doesn't 'boot you anymore' if you aren't 'active', thus the reason for the clones in the past. I can increase it.

The issue with Mars is he sometimes has a ping higher then 1000ms, somethings way greater then this, and would be the reason he gets booted. (He has ping spikes from the looks of it)

Ok, gotcha things are a bit different now game wise from my 28.8k days.  Chances are I did not get the huge lag spikes as Mars described.  At least, not as often.

Definatly depends where you are too. If you are in the boonies, you will normally get some lag spikes, sometimes in city too. In mars case I do see his ping raise and go down alot. I know it isn't his fault and all (nothing you can do about a bad connection) but the thing is it's a pretty bad connection Tongue

If your running XP or Vista or 7, try disabling the automatic updates. Dialup takes so long to get them that you're likely going to be ALWAYS downloading updates and playing catchup 24/7. Thus slowing down your dialup more than it should.

Broadband is the future however, I don't see how anyone can justify using dialup anymore. Most places out of range of DSL or cable internet can use a WiMax (microwave technology) provider for literally the same price. Even a cdma only data connection from a cell is faster than dialup.

How do you watch youtube? You're missing out on so much!

Not all places can get Wimax or Cell service.  Not yet anyways.  Where I grew up, the only available options are dial up or satellite.  The problem with satellite, I have been told at least, is the latency to go from computer, to satellite, and down to server and back makes gaming horrible.  Worse than dial up.  I don't know for sure if that is true or not.  But, yeah there are still many places that cannot receive any real broadband.

Dunno I think in his case it would be better. Latency wouldn't be over 1000ms.

Why are Canadians kicking USA's ass in the broadband department?
